Second Seder 2021

April 21, 2021 Howard Community

What a wonderful evening with friends and family.  It was a collaborative effort to develop a Haggadah based on the miracle Haggadah.  With beautiful pictures, beautiful words and beautiful intent added, the Second Seder was a moving and enjoyable event.

Long time members, newer members, visitors and those new to Judaism were all able to participate and share and since we were ALL at home, we managed to actually finish the 4 glasses of wine without worrying about Drinking and Driving.  We also enjoyed the Singing of Alden Solvoy’s Hallel in a minor key with music by Sue Radner Horowitz.

Join us for our next service to see what it is all about.

Purim 2021

March 18, 2021 Howard Community

Not your typical Purim, we had a zoom party with Lego’s, costumes and drinking.

Thanks to our special guests Peter and Petra and their extraordinary magic skills.  We went through the science and practice of creating 6 Purim flavoured drinks which were provided by the URJ.  They were yummy.  It’s a good thing it was prerecorded or we never would have finished the night.

The guessing game was fun and challenging (and I even knew the answers before hand and couldn’t guess them) and everyone seemed to enjoy figuring out who these famous characters were portraying.

Finally there was the music by our very own, home grown singing group.  I never knew you could change hats that fast, nor that any one household would own that many hats.  (I liked the colander).

There was no Karaoke this year, but I”m sure it will return in the next rendition of the BSVT Purim Tradition.

Games Night Feb 2021

February 6, 2021 Howard Community

We had a great night of fun when the mistress of events created another virtual extravaganza.  Beryl put together three very fun activities and if laughter is the measure, we had kilometres of fun.

The first was a drawing game in which participants had to draw a picture based on her descriptions.  I saw the picture ahead of time and thought there was no way that anyone would get it.  I was way wrong.  Everyone did a smash-up job and they all looked great.

Blurry Games Night

The second activity was a “20 questions” type event where the answers were pomegranates and groundhogs.  Surprisingly, bread boxes aren’t as popular as they used to be, but the youngest member of the crew is the only one who has one.  (Then again, she bakes a lot).

The third activity was trying to figure out who matched a truth that they had submitted earlier.  Who knew that our folks are so worldly or get into so much trouble while wearing daisy dukes?

Looking forward to our next party which should be Purim 5781.

Thank you everyone for participating.

Post High Holy Days

October 1, 2020 Howard Community

Greeting Card
A healthy and safe new year 5781. Card designed by a local Artist (Wenda Abel) and donated to BSVT.

Well the High Holy Days have come and gone.  We had a combination event of in-person (limited to 15 maximum including Clergy and the entire Tech Department) and Zoom.  I have heard many comments that it was actually a spiritually successful event. I know I cried at one point.  The glitches were few and the people were many as we listened and shared in an abbreviated version of the High Holy Day services that most of us are so used to.

I would have to say that the Rabbi and Cantorial Soloist hit all of the points I know I wanted to hear and did them well.  Jonah will return next year, same big fish, same big story and that’s okay.

We all had a chance to share, visit a bit and at least “see” each other again to remember that we may be more isolated than we like, but we are not alone.   We also all had a chance to kvell when we received our unexpected goody bags with lots of meaningful and extremely yummy surprises.  Thank you board for putting these together on short notice and delivering them far and wide.

Thank you also to all who attended and those who worked so hard to make this a significantly better event than it would have been without the work.

Shanna Tova.  May you be sealed in the book of life for many years to come.

Howard..

BSVT Shofar So Good

The following movie was put together by The Ruach, A new Jewish Experience, with Shofar blowers from all over the world.  B’nai Shalom v’Tikvah was proud to have representation in this video.   Look to the bottom right corner for a familiar face.
